What is spaced repetition?
Spaced repetition is a learning technique where you review information at increasing intervals over time, instead of cramming it all at once. Learn a word today, review it tomorrow, then in three days, then in a week, then in a month. Each time you successfully recall it, the gap before the next review gets longer.
It sounds almost too simple to work. But the timing is the entire point.
The science: why your brain forgets (and how to stop it)
In the 1880s, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a now-famous series of self-experiments and discovered something called the forgetting curve. Without reinforcement, we lose the majority of new information within days, often within hours.
But Ebbinghaus found something else too. Each time you successfully retrieve a memory right before you're about to forget it, that memory gets stronger and the forgetting curve flattens. You need less frequent review to keep it. Do this enough times, and the information moves from short-term recall into long-term, durable memory.
This is called the spacing effect, and it's one of the most replicated findings in cognitive psychology. It's why students who cram for a test can pass it Friday and forget everything by Monday, while students who review material spaced out over weeks actually retain it months or years later.
Why spaced repetition beats “studying harder”
Most language learners assume more repetition is always better. In reality, timing beats volume:
- Reviewing too soon wastes time. You already remember it, so there's little learning benefit.
- Reviewing too late means you've already forgotten it. You're relearning from scratch.
- Reviewing at the right moment, just as the memory is fading, is what triggers the brain to file it away long term.
